A day excursion from Skardu to Deosai National Park offers a truly unforgettable journey to one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in Pakistan. Known as the “Land of Giants,” Deosai is a vast alpine plateau located between the districts of Skardu, Astore, and Kharmang in Gilgit-Baltistan. Sitting at an average elevation of 4,114 meters (13,497 feet), it is the second-highest plateau in the world after Tibet’s Changtang Plateau. Deosai is famous for its wide, open plains that stretch as far as the eye can see, and framed by the majestic peaks of the Karakoram, Zanskar, Ladakh, and Himalayan ranges.
The park is a protected area spanning over 3,600 square kilometers, teeming with unique high-altitude flora and fauna. In the summer, the plains come alive with vibrant wildflowers and butterflies, while wildlife such as Himalayan brown bears, golden marmots, and ibex roam freely. Notable highlights within the park include Bara Pani, a scenic campsite offering panoramic views and glimpses of Nanga Parbat at sunrise; Kala Pani, a quieter stopover; and Ali Malik Mar Pass, a gateway into the plains from Skardu with stunning vantage points. Another gem is Sheosar Lake, one of the world’s highest alpine lakes, nestled like a sapphire amid green meadows and snow-capped ridges.
The drive from Skardu to Deosai, particularly in the summer months (June to September), is an experience in itself—crossing rugged mountain trails and breathtaking valleys. Whether it’s the deep blue stillness of Sheosar Lake, the golden glow of wildflowers under a high-altitude sun, or the sight of rare wildlife in their natural habitat, Deosai offers a rare blend of serenity and grandeur. It’s a perfect day trip for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers eager to witness the untouched beauty of Gilgit-Baltistan’s high-altitude wilderness.
